What does the art of painting still mean in today? That is a question that occupies Vincent Geyskens and that he explores in his diverse oeuvre. When we look at images, we look for connections with our world, with the reality we know. Vincent plays with these expectations of images and painting: what do images mean to us, what role do surfaces and paint play in how we read and analyse an image, what links do we make with images we encounter in our everyday life? For the artist, painting is a way of making thoughts concrete and matter visible. His work challenges you, the viewer. Vincent Geyskens uses figurative and abstract elements interchangeably and experiments with different types of surfaces. These range from paper to plastic, from canvas to objects he has found, and in this way he explores the limits and possibilities of the chosen surfaces. Exhibition: Museum M, Leuven, Belgium (27.05.-09.09.2021).

"Warm company on a dreary day" - Inspired by painting, cinema and his own neighbourhood, Pieter Jennes is the creator of a highly unique oeuvre. His very recognisable personal style draws on the work of Flemish painters from the 1920s, such as Jean Brusselmans and Gustave De Smet, but also Ensor, Otto Dix or Georg Grosz, African masks and folklore, the cinema of David Lynch and Werner Herzog. While his work is clearly rooted in the history of painting, it is equally clear that it is made in the present - note the disposable Starbucks coffee cup, the sign on a shop door that reads mondmasker verplicht ('face mask obligatory'), the pair of Adidas socks, the ad for Ola-brand ice creams." "Phoebe Hoban's definitive biography of the renowned American painter Alice Neel tells the unforgettable story of an artist whose life spanned the twentieth century, from women's suffrage through the Depression, McCarthyism, the civil rights movement, the sexual revolution, and feminism. Throughout her life and work, Neel constantly challenged convention, ultimately gaining an enduring place in the canon. Alice Neel's stated goal was to "capture the zeitgeist." Born into a proper Victorian family at the turn of the twentieth century, Neel reached voting age during suffrage. A quintessential bohemian, she was one of the first artists participating in the Easel Project of the Works Progress Administration, documenting the challenges of life during the Depression. An avowed humanist, Neel chose to paint the world around her, sticking to figurative work even during the peak of abstract expressionism. Neel never ceased pushing the envelope, creating a unique chronicle of her time. Neel was fiercely democratic in selecting her subjects, who represent an extraordinarily diverse population-from such legendary figures as Joe Gould to her Spanish Harlem neighbors in the 1940s, the art critic Meyer Shapiro, Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling, Andy Warhol, and major figures of the labor, civil rights and feminist movements-producing an indelible portrait of twentieth-century America. By dictating her own terms, Neel was able to transcend such personal tragedy as the death of her infant daughter, Santillana, a nervous breakdown and suicide attempts, and the separation from her second child, Isabetta. After spending much of her career in relative obscurity, Neel finally received a major museum retrospective in 1974, at the Whitney Museum of American Art, in New York. In this first paperback edition of the authoritative biography of Alice Neel, which serves also as a cultural history of twentieth-century New York, the author Phoebe Hoban documents the tumultuous life of the artist in vivid detail, creating a portrait of the artist as incisive as Neel's relentlessly honest paintings. With a new introduction by Hoban that explores Neel's enduring relevance, this biography is essential to understanding and appreciating the life and work of one of America's foremost artists"--

In this thorough critical appraisal, 16 specialists on modern art, art history, philosophy and religious studies examine the unique art, the cultural circumstances and art-historical positioning of Swedish abstractionist Hilma af Klint. Topics explored here range from early abstract art and the impact of Darwinism to Goethe's color theory, as well as the importance of occult religious movements such as theosophy and anthroposophy that influenced the early modernists, and discussions of af Klint's own personal diary notes and research. The book is based on the seminars that were held in conjunction with the exhibition "Hilma af Klint: A Pioneer of Abstraction" in 2013. This extremely successful exhibition attracted a record number of visitors to the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, after which it continued to the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum in Berlin and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark.

"Henry van de Velde (1863-1957) is considered one of the pioneers of modern architecture: he is world-famous for his beautiful buildings, furniture, utensils and typographical creations. Van de Velde, however, is much less well-known as a painter and draughtsman. Nevertheless, he had a lot of talent, especially as a draughtsman: his drawings bear witness to great originality and sincerity. Ten years after his training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp from 1880 to 1883, Van de Velde exchanged painting for the applied arts and architecture, fields in which he would build a brilliant career. His enormous output in the architectural field ensures that there is little interest in his painting work ? that attention only comes much later. Most of Van de Velde's pencil drawings and pastels were made in Wechelderzande a small village in the Kempen , in Kalmthout and in Knokke-Heist. He also drew landscapes in Weimar and South Tyrol. Despite the large number of exhibitions devoted to Henry van de Velde, few paid sufficient attention to his paintings and drawings. It was only after his death in 1957 that interest in his creations as a painter emerged. This English-language catalogue of his works with a trilingual introduction by Xavier Tricot, author of the catalogues of James Ensor's paintings and of Fernand Khnopff's and Léon Spilliaert's prints outlines Henry van de Velde's fascinating career as a painter and gifted draughtsman on the basis of some 60 paintings and 230 drawings. Compiled by Ronny Van de Velde, with an introduction by Xavier Tricot." --AbeBooks web site, viewed 10/11/21
